What Kind of Battery Does The Powkiddy V90S Use?

Upon opening my test unit, I have confirmed exactly what you can see on the image above (and the one below) – the Powkiddy V90S uses a 755060 3.7V 3000mAh battery, named after its size, which is exactly 7.5mm x 50mm x 60mm.

You can easily get a generic 755060 battery either on Amazon or on AliExpress, and the replacement process is really simple. It involves one JST plug, and just a little bit of fiddling with the small 2-pin connector which is used to connect the battery to the V90S motherboard.

The whole process is very similar to the battery replacement on the Miyoo Mini Plus and on the R36S, which utilize the exact same battery connection type as the V90S, but use different battery types. Let’s get to the instructions.

How To Replace the Battery in the Powkiddy V90S – Step by Step

Here are the exact steps you need to go through to easily replace your V90S battery in just 5 short steps. The whole process shouldn’t take you more than a few minutes total.

Step 1 – Remove The Battery Cover

Step 1 - Removing the battery cover.
Using a Phillips cross-head screwdriver (1.5 mm (≈PH00) to remove the battery cover.

Remove the back battery cover which is held down by a single screw.

After you unscrew it, the back cover should easily come off.

Step 2 – Lift The Battery Up

Step 2 - Lifting the battery up.
Lifting up the battery held down by a small piece of adhesive.

Next, you need to remove the old battery from the compartment. You can use any flat tool like a screwdriver to gently pry the battery off the compartment. As it’s held down by a small piece of adhesive, you might need to use a little bit more strength to do that.

After you have successfully removed the battery it should still be connected to the motherboard via a small 2-pin JST connector. If you’re able to salvage the small piece of adhesive, you can later use it to secure the battery in place once you’re done. A mobile phone repair kit like this can be very helpful here.

Step 3 – Disconnect The JST Plug

Step 3 - Disconnecting the JST plug.

Disconnect the 2-pin JST connector from the socket. You can use your fingernails to wiggle it out of the socket. If you’re unable to do so because of how crammed the space inside the compartment is, a small pair of tweezers might help you a lot here (again, available in the kit mentioned above).

Step 4 – Connect The New Battery

After you’ve successfully removed the old battery, inserting a new one is a very straightforward process. Insert the JST connector of the new battery into the socket making sure that it’s positioned the right way.

Step 4 - Connecting the new battery.
Replacing and plugging in a new battery.

Note: While the design of the JST connector should make it impossible for you to connect it to the socket the wrong way, make sure that you’re connecting the new battery with the right polarity (in other words – that you’re not attempting to force the connector to be plugged upside-down). If you do so, you risk damaging both the socket and your handheld.

Step 5 – Turn On The Console

Step 5 - Turning on the console.
That’s it! Now, if the new battery is charged, your V90S should boot up without any trouble.

Once the connector seats snugly in the socket (again, you can use a tool of your choice like tweezers to push it in if you can’t do it using just your fingers), the only thing that’s left to do is to put the new battery inside the compartment. You can, but don’t have to use the adhesive to fix the battery inside and prevent it from moving around. Close the lid and secure it with the screw, and you’re all done. Turn on the device to verify that it’s working correctly.

And just like that, you have your battery replaced. If you’d like to, you can also practice using the stock battery before your replacement arrives. If you’re doing this for the first time, the most difficult part will most likely be getting the JST plug out of the socket, just because of how small and tightly seated it is. Aside from that, this is a very simple process, even for a beginner.

Are There Any Ways To Extend the Battery Life on The V90S?

Playing more demanding games will always use up more battery power than emulating less capable systems like the Atari or GBC. | Game: “Need for Speed: Most Wanted” for the PSP

As with all retro handheld emulator consoles, the V90S is a device that doesn’t really use that much power overall. The things that use up the most energy when the handheld is on are the display (depending on the screen brightness setting), and the main chipset which consumes more power when emulating more demanding systems, for instance the ones that rely on 3D graphics rendering.

The Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules are often responsible for a lot of power use on handheld devices, however as the Powkiddy V90S features neither of these, you don’t have to worry about that. Just note that if you’re using an external Wi-Fi dongle, you should disconnect it once you no longer need it. These rules also apply to external peripherals.

In general, while the V90S in the default configuration should be able to provide at least 2 hours of gameplay when it comes to the more demanding games, realistically it will often be more with less graphics-heavy systems such as the GBC.

You can attempt to extend the battery life by lowering the screen brightness and lowering the speaker volume while playing games, but in most cases the final difference in battery life will be negligible. Remember that you can always use most powerbanks to charge your handheld rather quickly if you find the battery life to be unsatisfying.
